I love the chase.  You know, going after what you want.  It is the most thrilling thing, chasing after your dreams and goals.  At my job (now I only have one and that gives me more time for the chase) I only get to chase after corporate goals, not my own.  But when my badge hits the timeclock and I head home, the chase begins.

I have my ebook that will be relaunching in a few days (February 1 to be exact) and I am promoting affiliate products for some of my good friends.  The chase is awesome.

The question is, do you have something you are chasing?  Or is life chasing after you?  I read a disturbing survey result from one of my daughters yesterday (she forgets that I am on her MySpace friends list) and she mentioned that she wants to be popular.  Is that something worth chasing after?  When I was in high school, I would have liked to be popular, but I just did not fit in.  So popularity was not really a worthwhile pursuit of my time.  I did not chase after it, because I did not feel it was a possibility.

My goals changed throughout my life, but they always included wanting to be more than a person who works for someone else.  And I have been chasing that all my life.  I am getting closer all of the time, and now that I have more time, I plan on using it for increasing the value I give to my customers and the readers of my blog and my emails.  This will guarantee that more people will want to read my material, and following the plan out further, will want to buy based on my recommendations.  This doesn’t happen overnight, but it happens.

I am still chasing it!

A man decided that the best way to propose to his girlfriend would be to have a 30 second spot during the Super Bowl.  Turns out that a 30 second spot will cost $2.5 million.  He decides that it is still worth it and he goes out to try and raise the cash.

After some hard work, he manages to raise $75,000, which is nice money, but still $2.325 million shy of his goal.   A company has decided to foot the bill for him to be able to propose to his girlfriend on the Super Bowl Ad spot. What does this tell us?

First, never give up on your goals, no matter how big, because if you believe in them, you will end up achieving them.  Sure, you are not going to get bailed out by a mega corporation each time you work toward your goal, but even so, you can achieve a lot more if you keep working than you would if you gave up.

Second, companies want to get an ad into the Super Bowl at all costs. They are always looking for an angle that will get the most buzz for every dollar that they spend.  The company that is footing the bill for this proposal is already generating a LOT of buzz.  I heard about this on the radio, and the bloggers out there are filling up the blogoshpere with posts about this amazing story.  How many people do you think will be looking for this commercial on February 4th with the anticipation of finding out who this “JP” is and whether his girlfriend will accept.  In fact, the stipulation for this ad is that “JP” must video his girlfriend’s response and post it on one of the video hosting websites like YouTube or Video Google.  Don’t you think this is going to generate a lot of exposure for this mystery company?

Third, you have to hand it to this “JP” for coming up with this crazy way to propose to his girlfriend.  The guy is either crazy for this girl, or he is crazy in general, because he is opening himself to a lot of variables.

  • What if his girlfriend says no?  His video of her refusal still has to go on YouTube as part of the agreement.
  • What if his girlfriend is in the bathroom when the commercial comes on?  Can you imagine “JP” wheeling in a TV and video camera into the bathroom as the commercial comes on?  “Here Honey, watch this commercial, I hear the Clydesdales are going to actually drink a beer in this one!”
  • How do you keep a woman in the room without telling her why?
  • How do you explain the video apparatus in the living room in the middle of a Super Bowl game?  “Don’t worry, Honey, this is for the Halftime Entertainment!”

Needless to say, I will be watching, and I will go to the website to see the answer.  The whole idea is interesting, and the curiosity that this builds up will make for an interesting case study in advertising for years to come.

What’s Next?

Come up with some ideas for what other companies will use this new medium of video hosting to create a viral buzz machine like this Super Bowl Proposal?  Post your comments.  The I will choose one person with the most interesting idea to receive a one year subscription to my Resolve to Succeed Monthly Newsletter, the companion to my new ebook Resolve to Succeed in 2007! The cutoff for entering in this contest is February 1, 2007 at 12:01 AM Eastern time.  I will choose the winner and announce it on February 4, 2007 right before the Super Bowl.  So make sure you check back.

I just received permission to reprint this article from Larry Dotson about some of the coolest “secret” marketing strategies that we weren’t supposed to know. Larry is a very shrewd marketer who has created some very profitable campaigns. He is a great writer as well, so without further adieu, here is Larry:

Secret Marketing Strategies Exposed!

by Larry Dotson

The following article includes five secret marketing strategies. The most important thing is to study each marketing strategy with an open mind. The more you understand about any strategy, the more useful and beneficial it will be. A careful reading of these strategies could really make a big difference in your profits.

The “Sell And Raise” Strategy

The “make at least (no.) affiliate sales and I’ll add another $(no.) commission to each sale…” strategy tells your prospects that they can make a higher commission rate if they reach your sales goal. It will really motivate them to promote your affiliate program and give them something to strive for.

The “Reader Warning” Strategy

The “warning: just reading this letter could give you (a physical reaction)…” strategy tells your prospects that reading your sales letter could give them chills down their spine, goose bumps, the shakes, etc. People will want to read it to see what type of information could possibly do this to them.

The “Negotiation” Strategy

The “after hours of negotiating I finally talked (business person’s name) into giving you a special deal…” strategy tells your prospects you gave up a lot of your personal time to get them a discount. They will appreciate that and likely respond to the time you gave up to save them some money.

The “Beta Version” Strategy

The “if you order the beta version now, you will get a (no.)% discount…” strategy tells your prospects they will get a copy of your product that might contain a few bugs but will be cheaper. You could always tell them they will get the final version of your product when it’s complete.

The “Do The Math” Strategy

The “quality product + affordable price = great value…” strategy tells your prospects a single math equation that will help them understand just how good of a deal you are offering. Sometimes presenting your offer as something other than a normal sales pitch will persuade them to buy.
I hope that reading all five of these strategies was both educational and inspiring for you. The day will come when one or more of these strategies will have a beneficial impact on your business.

Keep in mind that marketing can change over time, so be sure you keep up to date with the latest marketing strategies. The more you know about marketing, the more successful you will become.

When television shows began selling their DVD sets immediately before the next season began, I saw an incredible marketing machine in place. The powers that be at the networks knew that people who were already fans of their favorite shows would want to buy the preceding season immediately prior to the start of the current season, which is typically advertised to the world every 15 minutes on most television networks.

But this season of 24, starring Kiefer Sutherland, has gone a step further. They hit us hard with a 4 hour season premiere over 2 days. And I mean this has to be the hardest hitting season yet. Jack is offered up as a sacrifice in the first hour, he has to kill one of his long time friends, and he watches a nuclear bomb go off in Los Angeles. After watching the first 4 hours, you are going to schedule the next 20 Monday nights to be sure you are sitting in front of the TV at 9:00PM.

The business model this year is incredible, however, in that immediately after showing this 4 hour premiere, it goes on sale in stores the very next day! So if you missed it, now you can hurry out and buy it. Or, if you are a fan and want to watch it again three or four more times before Monday night, then you will be in the stores Tuesday to pick up your copy. I have to hand it to the production team, they really played this out impressively. I just wish I could get a piece of that action.

So let’s see how we could use this type of business model in our niches. Those people who blog a lot, could have an ebook of their last year of postings in an ebook and sell them. If you are one of the video bloggers, you could have a DVD full of your best videos. I sell software on my website, and one of the programs I sell is DeadEasy Wow! eBook Maker, and I have used it to compile PLR rights products into some unique products that make the originals look like a 2 year old created it. I also get a good price for them by doing this. But this software would actually be very useful to the people who could be making text, audio and video products that they could be launching for a big payout.

So while I was impressed with 24: the show, I am even more inspired by the 24 business model, since I can see more programs following up with this as well. What if Mike Filsaime were to have a seminar, and on the day after the seminar, have a DVD product of the seminar available for sale? Our technology has reached the point where we can have audios and videos piped across the world to a place where a team of experts can edit and format the product into a sellable format ready to be sent to a reproduction fulfillment plant where orders can be sent and they ship out the finished product to the thousands of people who could not attend. We have reached the age where a product can be created on the fly and marketed instantly to thousands of people via JV partners all at the push of a button.

Keep your eyes on a group of marketers that is coming under the radar. They have their following, and in a few months, if not weeks, they will burst upon the Internet Marketing scene with the force of one of the suitcase nukes that melted a crater in Los Angeles in 24. I won’t tell you their names, but I will tell you that in my February edition of Resolve to Succeed Monthly Newsletter, you will get to meet one or two of them. I have the privilege of interviewing some amazing people, and if you are a subscriber, you will get to see it all! Right now the only way to subscribe to the newsletter is to buy my ebook: Resolve to Succeed in 2007!

Have an amazing day!
