All You Need Is Love!

Happy Valentine’s Day to all of my readers and followers on all of the social networks I am a part of. I really do love each and every one of the people I interact with. It is such a pleasure to know that thousands of people are out there and have an interest in what I am doing.

Sometimes, it appears like my ego talking, but it is very humbling, really, when I consider how far we have come together.

You were there when I was living through the worst times of my life, and when I made a decision, you were there to help me stick to it. Not having a community like the one that surrounds me is a scary thought. After all, if I were only interested in myself, it would be easy to slip into the routine of work till 5, eat dinner, watch TV and sleep until I have to do it all over again.

But my life has not revolved around me so much as it has evolved around you. As I meet new people at events and on Twitter, Facebook, Myspace and elsewhere, I see that my mission is not complete until I have helped others around me find their why and help them achieve it!

The unselfishness of one’s mission is what determines how well that mission will be received. While many believe that all I want to do is sell products, it is the sales of these products that allows me the time to spend with my coaching students. It also means that I do not have to charge thousands of dollars for coaching when my mentors are telling me that I should double or even triple my prices.

New York Jets Defeat Marty Schottenheimer’s Old Team

I found a whole new respect for the New York Jets today!

This weekend was one where I totally missed most of the football games, because I was at a workshop with Michael Penland, and I could not get away to watch the games except for the final game on Sunday afternoon.

We finished close to 5 PM and we raced to Maggiano’s “Little Italy” Restaurant and waited until 7:30 for a table. Well, while we were waiting for the table, we were hanging out at the bar and I was able to catch the end of the 2nd quarter and the beginning of the 3rd quarter before we were ushered to our table. When you have 20+ people sitting at your table, things take much longer to happen, so after I placed my food order, I raced back to the bar to find the Jets had grabbed the lead from the chargers and were holding an impressive 17 – 7 lead as the Chargers drove down the field and scored a touchdown.

At that point, the Chargers had a little over 2 minutes and one timeout remaining to get the ball back. I asked Marty Schottenheimer sitting in front of me at the bar what he thought about the Chargers possibly taking a shot at an on side kick to get the ball back without giving the Jets a chance to foil them. Marty said, “I’d kick it deep and make them get a first down!”

Now Marty’s son, Brian Schottenheimer, is the Offensive Coordinator of the Jets, and Marty admitted to me when introduced to him earlier in the evening that he was “a wreck” watching his son call the plays for the rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez! When Marty said this, the Jets were behind the Chargers 3-7 and the Jets’ defense had been dominating the game. But when I came back to the bar to watch more of the game, the Jets had scored two unanswered touchdowns and Marty was much more at ease, having seen his son make some great calls!

Still, you could tell the Chargers were not listening to Marty, because they did attempt the on side kick and the Jets managed to predict the location of the kick and pulled it in! Standing behind a 30 year veteran of football coaching and picking his brain while the game unfolded was really cool. When you hear someone validate the decisions that you would have done makes you feel pretty good!

The Jets tried 3 times to get a first down, and they ended up with 4th down and half a yard to go… all they needed was a first down, and the Chargers would be unable to stop the clock. The final minute could tick down to zero and the Jets could advance to the Division Championship game next week in Indianapolis.

Marty was surrounded with other football coaches and ex-players, which leads me to believe that there is a good chance that a new job may be on the horizon. After all, if some teams are interested in the seasoned head coach, he should have a crew ready to jump on board as soon as the job is announced. So while I don’t know anything for certain, it just looked a little like Marty might be in the process of creating a team that he could put into action at a moment’s notice!

I don’t know if it was because of the major successes that Michael Penland helped me achieve in overcoming the obstacles I had in my mind, but I was not nervous at all as I shook hands with Marty Schottenheimer, in fact, I felt a kind of peace and tranquility that tells you that you are among your peers.

No, I am not a football coach, I am a business coach. But the salary difference does not mean that I am any less important to my clients as Marty is to the team that hires him. So I was able to enjoy my time with him and his friends without feeling inferior in any way. After all, I intend to be on television in the future, anyway. So it is just another thing I will have in common with the former Chargers’ head coach!
