I remember Yves as the comedian of the family, and his ability to talk about any subject as though he knew it inside and out. We lost touch for all of 30 years, however, as I spent a good portion of my life isolated from my Canadian family, mainly because of I was embarrassed at my station in life (I expected to be much more successful than I currently was) and had no money to travel.

Luckily for me, my dad was the guy who kept in touch with everyone, he is the great communicator. He can find out what is going on in every segment of the family. So at least I was finding out here and there what was going on. But on this trip to Quebec, the news helped me catch a lot of what is going on in Yves’ life, because his job as the director of the FTQ (Quebec Federation of Labour – Translated from Fédération des travailleurs et travailleuses du Québec) makes him the spokesperson for the union whenever the press has a question for the union. Luckily for the union, his quick thinking and his ability to speak well have made him a celebrity of sorts on all the news channels.

I was hoping to find a video or two of him speaking to the press, but youtube did not have any.

But while the stuff is hitting the fan for the unions, at least I know that my cousin has it all under control on his end! Way to go, Yves!

Depression is something that we have all felt. It is a sinking feeling within our very souls, that we are lacking something we desperately need to give us joy. Sometimes it is a chemical imbalance. Most of the time it is just hormones or a consistent programming of our subconscious mind to believe that we need something to make us happy.

Drug companies have been trying really hard to make us believe we are more depressed than we should be, and that it is a medical condition. I went through a depression in the late 90’s, and the doctors tried using drugs to help me. The drugs made me numb to the world. They did not cure my depression. When they tried to switch the drugs on me, I almost had a nervous breakdown, and I actually had suicidal thoughts. The real cause was the way I was handling my relationship, but I did not want to blame myself for a failing relationship. Much better to just take the drugs.

Until I tried to take myself off those drugs. It took over 6 months, and my legs felt like they had electrodes pulsing electricity through them every few minutes. The sensation was terrible, and it took a long time to go away.

I wish I had had an opportunity to attend Celebrate Recovery back then. It wasn’t until I attended CR in 2008 that I actually got over my depression. I had mostly gotten away from it because I had thrown myself into my online work from 2007 onwards, and because I was too busy to think about it, I didn’t suffer from the intense lows that I used to have.

Every once in a while, I would come close, but usually getting in touch with one of my friends online would help me through it. But Celebrate Recovery helped me accept that I am not perfect, and that I can fail and still get up and brush myself off and try again. I never again thought of giving up.

Which Brings Me Back To Today

Yesterday I got some bad news. I felt like I had gotten kicked in the stomach. The worst part was it came when I was away from home, I am in Canada to help my parents get packed up and then we are going to drive back home to Florida. But this bad news felt like a sucker punch.

Of course I could have seen it coming. It was all my fault, but when you pretend the problem doesn’t exist, you kind of hope it will go away. Mine didn’t go away in the way that I anticipated. The reason for the problem went away. So now I face the prospect of the drive to Florida to an empty house when I get home. I will survive, but I will definitely have to remember to forgive myself for my failures and dust myself off… because I will most certainly go on!

Wealth is one of those nebulous concepts that is really just a state of mind. I am living comfortably right now. I am catching up with the bills. I have enough spare time to do the things I like to do.

But am I complacent? Far from it. I still want to be able to take care of my own grandchildren when they finally arrive and also be there for Yvonne’s grandkids. To me that is the reason I do what I do. Sometimes I fool myself into believing it is for some noble cause or for a trinket I can park in my driveway, but at the end of my life, I want to be able to say that my grandkids were able to survive because I was there to help.

The fireworks were very beautiful, but the view was obstructed on the bank of the river where we were situated. A gnarly old oak tree towered over the Riverfront Crab House and partially blocked the fireworks. But we could see enough of them to still be thrilled with the beauty and excitement of the exploding shells, the dancing colored lights in the sky and the sparkles that descended from the heavens after every large explosion.

The tree itself lent a timeless dignity to the fireworks show. The years had obviously worked over that tree, with its branches divided into two arms that appeared to be pointing toward the waning full moon and the view across the river. The Spanish moss draped over all of the branches and flowing out from the clusters of leaves gave that tree a wise, stately appearance as it experienced the fireworks with us once more.

How many fireworks had this tree presided over in its lifetime? Had it watched the early inhabitants of the Homosassa area first fish there on the river? When the docks were built over the years, did it wonder if it was going to end up as the wood that made up the dock? How many hundreds of children attempted to climb up its thick trunk to reach the wide platform made by the spreading out of its main branches?

The fireworks, instead of being partially blocked by this tree, suddenly became enhanced by the history that came pouring into my mind as I realized that I was seeing my first fireworks at this location, but that this tree had witnessed hundreds before me. With that realization came a shooting star across the sky. It cut an arc straight into the midst of the exploding shells and sparkling streaks of light.

God was pointing out how perfect my life is. For me.

What I go through on a daily, weekly, monthly and annual basis is not necessarily controlled by me. The only control I have is how I react to and work with the things that happen to and around me. And I would not have it any other way! I want to be like that oak tree… No matter what storms pass through, I am going to enjoy my time here on this earth and make it the most pleasant I can for those around me.

Of course I am still striving to achieve more. I might as well give up and die if I had nothing else to live for… life is not about just letting things happen. We have to make things happen, make our breaks and make our own luck by stacking the deck in our favor. The dealer pulls the cards off the top of the deck and we make the hands. The idea is to do the things that increase our chances of achieving our goals.

If you are looking to enhance your life, but have not yet figured out where you are really going, you are not alone. Hundreds of thousands of marketers (new and seasoned) are flailing about in a boat without a rudder. They have no vision of where they are going and the results of their efforts show it. Often that is because they haven’t the first idea of what they should be doing next.  If you have something in mind for your future, leave it as a comment. No, I don’t mean it is time to click yes on the Viagra spam in my inbox… but I mean that my tough guy image is melting away.

You see, as a father to 3 daughters, I always tried to be the authoritarian figure, while my wife was their bud. But over time, I found this to be detrimental to our relationships, since my wife is still their “go to” person whenever the girls want to talk.

Meanwhile, I have begun to use social media.
In social media, you make a lot of friends quickly. Some people are influencers, some are followers and the people in between are the connectors who make sure you find what you are looking for. The connectors are the ones who help you locate the person who knows how to shoot video or install blogs when you ask for help.

By spending a lot more time on social media, I find myself being influenced by a lot of people with hearts of gold. When I wake up grumpy because my cat wouldn’t let me sleep, a couple of cool tweeple (people on twitter) raise my spirits instantly with a quick tweet to acknowledge my existence. By doing this, they give love in a way that validates, without expecting anything in return.

I believe that being validated by hundreds of people on a daily basis has a way of transforming one’s heart. Feeling the emotions from people all over the world as each one has a roller coaster of feelings throughout the events in a day, a week, a year or even a life! It is through these feelings that we manage our lives, and having others show that they care is really important. We really do need that in our lives.

Look at the 2001 movie How The Grinch Stole Christmas and see the effect of a little girl’s love on a gnarly old Grinch’s heart. His realization that you couldn’t buy Christmas Joy was compounded by the fact that Cindy-Lou Who didn’t buy the scary Grinch demeanor to form a powerful combination of heart expanding magic!

As my twitter following expanded into the 1000 and now 1450 range, more people with love in their lives share happiness, sadness, fears and triumphs in a way that really makes a difference (at least in my life it does). When I have situations that make me feel alone, I simply reach out to my social media brothers and sisters and someone out there brings me out of the funk that may have been keeping So a toughened heart can get bathed in the love of hundreds of people and eventually the crusty exterior gets loosened and the soft middle is exposed.

Now don’t get me wrong, if I see a boy with his hand within a mile of my daughters, I still get out the shotgun, but now I smile at my daughter while I am doing it.

So is what you allow to affect you.

I have explained in a previous blog post what my home looks like, and I am in the process of getting out of there.  But it will take some time, which I did not have when I worked at my job.  So I left my job to make my own success story.

Things sometimes do not go as well as we plan them, but I do not let that get to me, instead I use them to my advantage, and even to motivate me. 

But I was clobbered today.

My father came to make sure I was still alive because he hadn’t heard from me for the last few days.  He was not pleased with my living conditions… he let me know this and then gave me a lecture about leaving my job when I am struggling and how I was a failure and always will be.

I am sure it was meant as some sort of intervention…

Or a motivation.

I have this uncanny ability to just let him talk and defuse his rants by just shutting up.  Only today, he was hitting me below the belt and I did not just take it.

He asked me, “Do you really believe you can live like this without a job?”

“First of all, I don’t see this as being where I am going to be living for the rest of my life, and a couple of setbacks does not mean I can’t turn them around.  I am not going to be living in these conditions much longer.” I spoke politely, but with a force that was not to be denied! After all, I have plans in place to make this all go away without a forest fire!  I am training with some of the best minds in the world and I am not afraid to do what it takes to beat circumstances.

Circumstances are not something that you hide under.

You deal with them and move on.  I was devastated after he drove off… felt tears welling up in my eyes, but I knew I had to go in and face my teenage daughters in the house, who knew what I had just been subjected to by the body language of the two of us.

Instead, I put on a smile and went in the house and said, “well that was pleasant!”

Inside I am still kind of numb, and I am using my blog as a therapist, since it is never a good idea to keep everything locked up inside.  The more you talk through the hurt, the better you understand it for what it is.

A few minutes later the horn sounded outside and I looked out to see my dad’s van back in the driveway.  I braced myself and went back outside and he asked me, “I forgot that I came over to ask you if you were coming over for Thanksgiving…”

Sometimes it is a strange thing to be a parent.

I am going to make damn sure I never call my children failures… because words are way too powerful to be thrown around lightly!
