I had someone who works with me Google my name over the weekend. She read my blog posts and being the type that tells you the blunt truth, told me that she was waiting for the punch line in all of my posts, but none ever came. She expected that my personality would show in my blog posts, but instead she only saw dry and “boring” material.
That got me to thinking.
I am always serious in my writing, because I want to come across as knowing my stuff.
But that isn’t me. That is some professor, a trainer, someone who is always looking to be all business.
I am hardly ever that way around others. I am always cracking jokes, shooting off one-liners like the Three Stooges shooting the toupee off of some bystander in a gunfight. That is me, not the dry emotionless teacher I have tried to make myself into. No wonder I had struggled for the last month or so to get excited about what I was doing.
So be careful what you portray to people. If you find yourself coming off as someone that you aren’t, people may end up not liking the one you aren’t. You should be the same person who befriended others on the playground (unless you were the one who beat people up if they didn’t like you). You need to be the one who attracted your first girlfriend, or your current significant other. After all, looks alone won’t get you anywhere (ok, I take that back, because I see people all the time who are total asses but they look nice and they are popular – like the rich jerk), but your personality will win you more friends than your looks will.
So what I am trying to say (get to the point already!) is if you are making your emails, blog posts and sales letters sound like they are coming from someone else, someone else will make the sales. You want people to know, like and trust YOU! They will be more prone to getting sales, making lifelong customers and getting referrals.
The other thing to consider is, not everyone will like you, and you have to ok with that. Otherwise you stand a good chance of being one stressed out, lonely person. So give your fans, readers or visitors what they signed up for. and if you don’t hit it off with everyone, don’t beat yourself up (beat them up instead) about it. (I was just kidding about beating them up about it)
So today, when you plan out your content for the next thing you are writing, remember that you should NOT remove yourself from your own writing. Because your readers may remove you from their reading list!
Have an amazing day, eh?
Mike

Excellent advice! Unfortunately, too often marketers (online and offline) talk to prospects and customers as if they were cardboard cutouts who wouldn’t know what to think of a marketer who is who he is.
My response is usually to back away… fast. Now and then, I’ll tell them something along the line of, “Hey, when you’re done practicing what you want to say, let me know so I can start paying attention. Until then buy your own dolly to pretend to that you’re who you’re not.” If that offends someone, then we’re both better off not continuing the relationship.
Keep up the good work.
Exactly.
I needed someone who knows me to relate that to me before I realized what was happening. Even though she could have put it in a way that didn’t make me feel bad (she said “I read a few pages and got bored and left.”).
We live and learn. I am definitely taking that as a lesson.
Have an amazing day!
Mike
