I manage twitter accounts for some businesses in
my area. This is a very lucrative new field to go into,
but the Twitter Assistants out there need to be very
careful of how they deal with their clients’ followers.

First of all, it is not good form to tweet people with
your links immediately when you first meet them.
That is like a used car salesman telling you about
the 1979 Pontiac Bonneville he just got in when you
never said you were looking for a car, let alone a
piece of crap.

Next is the autoDM. If you must use an autoDM
(Direct Message that is sent when someone
follows you), and I do use them, do NOT start
the relationship by asking them to buy something
from you, no matter how freaking amazing that
thing is! I send out one of 6 questions to engage
my new followers to find out if they read their
DMs and to develop a relationship. I had one guy
respond that all he wanted was for me to click on
the link that he had autoDM’d me. #Unfollow!

Finally, if all you ever do is send out content via
RSS feeds from your blog or other aggregators,
then you will soon lose a lot of the followers you
worked so hard to get! Interaction is the prime
part of social networks. Twitter is especially
powerful because of the powerful relationships
that can be forged if done correctly!

My intern showed me how he had built up a following
using almost nothing but autocontent, autofollow and
autoDM and I asked him how many people he had
replied to and retweeted in that group.
